Special Considerations in College Counseling

Has your child faced challenges or even taken an educational detour en-route to college?

The Goldberg Center for Educational PlanningTM specializes in providing college and alternative post-secondary planning for students who have struggled at one point or another.Special Needs College

Working one-on-one with the student, our educational consultants take into account the emotional, social, academic, and environmental factors that must come together to enable that individual to achieve success.

Our consultants excel in helping...

  • students with a complex learning and/or needs profile, including ADD/ADHD, language-based and non-verbal learning differences, and Asperger's Syndrome
  • those recovering from substance abuse, eating disorders, or other emotional-behavioral disorders who are seeking a safe learning environment
  • students who will require very careful attention in the college planning process due to exceptional circumstances or incidents that may require explanation
  • students who are appropriately transitioning out of a special school, program, hospital, etc.
  • families that are overwhelmed by the amount of information and number of options available in the college and alternative post-secondary planning process
  • parents who cannot reach consensus on what is the best for their child

Our clients receive individualized guidance throughout the college or alternative post-secondary planning and application processes - whether it be a traditional 2- or 4-year college, a gap experience, transitional living program, or some combination of options.

We help the student define priorities and goals, explore and compare options, and then prepare for campus visits and interviews. We continue to offer guidance throughout the application process, including brainstorming topics and feedback on application essays as well as keeping the student "on task" to meet all deadlines.

Our consultants possess the training, credentials, and experience to work with a wide range of students with special educational and therapeutic needs. We focus simultaneously on the individual student's strengths and interests so that he or she is able to put his or her best foot forward when considering college or other post-secondary options.
