Often this is where we enter the mix. Families and students often come to The Goldberg Center for Educational PlanningTM when it is time to decide the colleges to which the student should apply and for help managing the college application process.
The goal of a student when applying to college is to put together all of the pieces of his/her personal puzzle so that the admissions officers see the complete picture. Our educational consultants help students recognize that they have a picture to present and how all of their individual pieces (i.e., academic coursework, sports, clubs, work, interests, etc.) fit together.
After the student (with the consultant's help) has identified - through research, campus visits, etc - the colleges that appear to fit the student's needs, interests, and goals, the actual process of applying to college begins.
Our college consultants will:
- acquaint students with The Common Application and help them set up their accounts, and familiarize them with any proprietary applications (for schools that do not accept The Common Application)
- brainstorm topics for their college admissions essay(s) and then guide them through the process of essay-writing
- help the student compile a clear, concise activities "resume" to accurately convey their passions
- advise the student regarding timing and tutoring for standardized tests
- coach the student on requesting recommendations from teachers and others
- motivate students to stay on top of all of the above so that parents can be parents and NOT the "application police"
- rejoice with everyone when it's all done!
We are, of course, also accessible to parents throughout the process to help alleviate concerns and address questions they may have. However, our approach encourages the student to be in the driver's seat throughout the college research and application processes. It has been our experience that students who are not motivated to drive the process may not be ready for college.
